Gay Bars Receive Death Threats

The owners of eleven gay bars in Seattle have received death threats against their clintele:

I’m guessing this is either a hoax or nothing more than a scare tactic, as anyone intent on killing with poison would presumably not tell the world exactly which poison they intend on using beforehand. Actually, anyone intent on killing with poison would presumably not tell the world at all, as the letters have had the rather predictable effect of making patrons of the targetted bars more wary about leaving their drinks unattended than they usually would be.

I have to admit, though, that pulling a stunt like this at a time when the economy is in crisis does take a certain mean-spirited ingenuity. Plenty of commentors are speculating as to a potential religious motive behind the letters, which I guess makes sense – this could conceivably be retaliation for the violent attacks some gay rights activists have taken part in since the success of Proposition 8. If that’s the case, and if this is a beginning of a depressing trend of escalation, let’s hope everyone involved can keep their tempers in check before someone actually does end up dead.
