Saving Face?

I haven’t written anything about the Gaza conflict on here, mainly because I don’t feel that I’m qualified to say anything particularly meaningful about it. But while reading about on various news websites and blogs, I’ve become increasingly aware of the rather disturbing assumption among some commentators that  ‘saving face’ should be a factor for Israel when it decides whether to withdraw from Gaza.

Isn’t the idea of national pride utterly absurd when one considers that a war is going on? This isn’t a World Cup football match or something – people are dying as a result of the Gaza invasion, which has the potential to turn extremely ugly indeed if any other countries decide to get involved. Surely avoiding armed conflict is more important than almost any other consideration?
